Scientific Name: Monstera deliciosa

Folk Name: Fruit salad plant, Mexican bread fruit and Swiss cheese plant.

You will recognize it by is "holey" leaves - well, the mature ones. The baby leaves start out as heart shapes.

IS MONSTERA EDIBLE?

These plants get their unique name from two different characteristics.

They produce an edible fruit which has an appealing taste, hence the deliciosa, but they are also somewhat monstrous in their capacity for growth, with some reaching upwards of sixty feet high and leaves that span two feet!

They have heart-shaped, glossy leaves that are somewhat tough in texture, and as they age, they gain holes in the leaves, hence the folk name of Swiss cheese plant. 

They are tropical plants, so they do well with heat and humidity. Likewise, they need a balance of sun and shade to thrive, so when they’re kept indoors, its best to keep them in a place with indirect lighting.

The fruit is elongated and somewhat cylindrical, with a taste similar to pineapple combined with banana. They are climbers which need a lot of room to grow, so be sure to put them in an area with ample space. You might even want to look into supporting larger plants with stakes or poles. 

The fruit has a pineapple like taste to it. However like pineapples, if eaten when unripe it can be toxic.

You should water your sexy monstera plant once a week or when the soil 2 inches down is dry. It prefers a humid environment.

HOW BIG CAN A MONSTERA GET?

This beautiful monster plant can grow up to about eight feet high. The leaves of your monstera baby can grow to about two or three feet. 

HOW DO MONSTERA PLANTS GET HOLES?

As the monstera plant matures, it starts to develop slits in its leaves. Studies have shown that monstera develops it's holes to be able to to catch sunlight. However, this has not really been proven - so it remains a mystery as of now.
