There are quite a few different types of snake plant. There are about 70 or more different types of Sansevieria. The most common is Sansevieria trifasciata (Mother-in-law’s tongue).

​HOW TO CARE FOR SNAKE PLANTS

Characteristics and Care: Snake Plant is an evergreen perennial, with leaves that grow in a straight upward path. These leaves, when the plant is mature, are a dark green color crisscrossed greying to light green bands.

The sharp appearance of the leaves is what gives this plant it’s folk name of Mother-In-Law’s-Tongue!

If you’re someone who doesn’t think you have the time or skills to keep a houseplant alive and thriving, the Snake Plant is an ideal choice to start with!

Not only is it extremely forgiving in regards to how much you water it, it's also resistant to insects and doesn’t need a ton of direct sunlight to stay healthy. Just make sure that the soil drains really well and that the pot doesn't get water-logged. 

​They’re also incredibly easy to propagate, as you simply take a few trimmings from one plant and nest them in soil to produce another plant.

Remember that if you allow the snake plant to sit in a pot that is water-logged and is not draining well, it will start to rot. Here are some other things to be aware of:
  • Crinkly, crunchy leaves are a sign that the plant is not getting enough water.
  • Drooping leaves are a sign of over watering. It's best to wait until the soil becomes dry before watering again.
  • Soft stalk - could be the start of the of rotting. Signs of over watering or water logging.
